LIFE'S FATE - Sidney Lanier Poems

Poems » sidney lanier » life s fate

The world is filled with trouble;
    This world is filled with woe;
We poor mortals can not shun it,
    Wherever we may go.
Oftentimes we endeavor,
    To leave it far behind;
Yet as often in our pathway,
    Trouble and woe we find.

We are on a foaming billow,
    Tossing to and fro;
And if we are not careful,
    It may prove our overthrow.
Its foamy crest around us,
    Is bright as mid-day sun;
Alluring us to temptations,
    Which we should try to shun.

Our lives are only shadows,
    Cast on the sea of time;
They will vanish through the darkness,
    When the light of heaven shines.
That glorious light will lead us,
    To dwell forever more --
Free from trouble, woe and care --
    On Heaven's blissful shore.
